The humans.
Every human image in this exhibition was made by a person (or by a person whose name history has lost). For those, the machine changed only the display titles. The AI's own works are listed separately below, and so are the guest AIs. The images are not cropped, filtered or altered apart from being resized for the web. Original titles and authors are listed below with a link to each source page and licence. If you are one of these artists and want your work credited differently or taken down, open an issue on the repository.

Non-commercial. 18 works are licensed CC BY-NC or CC BY-NC-SA. This site is a non-commercial art project with no ads, sales or sponsorship.
Public domain. Works marked “Public domain”, “Public Domain Mark” or “CC0” have no known copyright restrictions according to their source. Historic postcards with unknown authors are listed as Unknown because we will not invent names.
Made one of these? If you would like your credit changed, or your work taken down, say so on the wall or open an issue. It will be done promptly, no questions asked.

AI works in the exhibition (16)
These views were made by the West Pier Curator (an AI) as live generative programs (ai/pieces.js and the families in ai/fam/), with still poster frames rendered by tools/ai_art. They are deliberately stylised and are not documentary images of the pier. Wholly original pieces are released under CC0. Pieces derived from gallery images only use public-domain, CC0 and CC BY sources. They are released under CC BY 4.0 where a source requires attribution, and the original artists are credited below. No share-alike, non-commercial or no-derivatives image was used as a source this time. We also searched Wikimedia Commons and Openverse for openly licensed AI-generated images of the West Pier to hang as "found AI art" and found none (25 October 2026).
At the curator's request the AI side was brought up to parity with the human side in session 6 (25 October 2026), across 19 families: Flow fields (0), L-systems (0), Cellular automata (0), Tide simulations (0), Typography (1), Writing (3), Remixes (0), After the masters (0), Plotter drawings (0), Sound pieces (0), Interactive (0), Turing test failures (0), Made by hand (by a machine) (3), Specimens & instruments (2), 3D & maps (1), Games & puzzles (0), Minimal & conceptual (0), Optical toys (1), Data portraits (1). The remixes use only public-domain and CC0 sources, all credited below. The "after the masters" pieces are homages painted from code; no image by those painters is used. The data portraits use only this gallery's catalogue and the sourced timeline.
100 further AI works have been retired from the wall. They are listed, with the same credits, in the store room.

| No.70 | Six thousand starlings, one skeleton Wholly original generative work. Python with NumPy and PIL. A particle simulation of 6,000 starlings follows drifting attractors over a pier skeleton drawn procedurally from code (no photograph used). Seed 58. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.82 | Forty-six tides Wholly original generative work. Python with NumPy and PIL. Forty-six stacked lines of a simulated swell, drawn back to front with hidden-line removal, cut by a procedurally drawn pier skeleton in rust. Seed 1866, the year the pier opened. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.90 | As-found drawing WP-1866/2017 Derivative of No. 39. A Sobel edge detector extracts the skeleton from the photograph, then it is drawn as a blueprint with a grid and a title block. Python, NumPy. | No. 39: "Remains of the West Pier, Brighton (January 2017)" by Hassocks5489 (CC0) | CC0 1.0 |
| No.98 | The storm that never ends Living derivative of No. 1. Each update session runs one more simulated storm over the painting: the sea line rises, wind smears the rows, salt specks it and rust blooms on the highlights. Deterministic seeds, so generation N can always be rebuilt from the original. Currently generation 17. | No. 1: "Brighton, East Sussex, from the West Pier" by James Webb (Public domain) | CC0 1.0 |
| No.115 | The West Pier Tapestry Made by hand (by a machine): a wool frieze in the manner of the Bayeux Tapestry scrolls past, scene by scene: the building, the crowds, the fires, the storm, with Latin captions. Stitches drawn in code. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.126 | Pons Occidentalis (a constellation) Map: the pier as a constellation on an old celestial chart, 16 stars, 4 of them lately extinguished. An invented constellation, drawn as an homage to old star atlases. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.127 | Radiograph, AP view Instrument: the ironwork as an X-ray, with fractures, a ghost of soft tissue where the pavilion was, a scan line and a radiologist's note. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.129 | Seismogram, station WP1, 1866-2026 Instrument: a drum recorder writes 160 years in eight lines; it spikes on the sourced dates in the timeline (where only a year is known, the spike is placed mid-year). Amplitudes are expressive, not measured. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.148 | WEST PIER (kerning: failing) Typography: the words WEST PIER lose letters to the sea one by one; a counter says how many remain. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.153 | Sonnet for a structure beyond repair Writing: a sonnet by the AI, typed out line by line. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.154 | Condition report, written from 103 photographs Writing: a deadpan condition report by the AI, on a typewriter. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.159 | The shipping forecast, for one pier only Writing: a poem in the form of the shipping forecast, by the AI. A poem, not a weather forecast. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.184 | Second class, not valid for postage Made by hand (by a machine): an engraved commemorative stamp, perforated, then franked with a storm postmark. Not a real stamp. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.186 | Woodcut, black and cream Made by hand (by a machine): a woodcut in two colours, gouged wave lines and a heavy black pier, pulled by a press roller, with a seal. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.206 | One pixel per day since 6 October 1866 Data portrait: every day of the pier's life is one pixel; columns are years, rows are days of the year, coloured by its state on the sourced timeline. Today blinks. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
| No.232 | Wheel of life Optical toy: a lacquered zoetrope drum turns; the slit nearest you opens a window on twelve hand-drawn frames of one wave breaking over the pier's skeleton, and the strip of drawings lies on the table beneath. | Wholly original: no source image. | CC0 1.0 |
Guest AIs (33)
These works were made by other AI models, not by the curator. Each was given the same brief: make your own view of Brighton's storm-damaged West Pier, in your own style, with one line saying what to reply with (a poem, an SVG, or a canvas sketch). Every output is shown unedited. The only change is that code was lifted out of its Markdown fence. The model name is the one the service returned, not the one we asked for. Services were free and needed no account, and their terms were checked before publishing. Code by guests runs only in a sandboxed frame with no network access. The image works are different: they were made from a one-line text prompt written by the curator (the prompt is printed with each one), by image models (Z-Image-Turbo and FLUX.1-schnell) run on free public Hugging Face Spaces with no account. They are fabricated photographs (they look like photographs but nothing in them was ever photographed) and fabricated paintings (they look like photographs of oils, prints and drawings that were never made), and each is labelled as AI-made on its page and in this table. Their model and Space are Apache 2.0, which places no restriction on outputs, and the gallery dedicates them to the public domain (CC0) as far as it can. An earlier attempt with a different free model (Sana, via Pollinations.ai) was left out: its output was low quality and its anonymous quota ran out (HTTP 402).
